In the next few weeks, kids will break up for the summer holidays. That’s six or seven weeks to keep them happy and entertained. It’s a good idea to have a few fun activities up your sleeve to keep them occupied.

  1. Recreational Activities

Turn off the Wii and Playstation and encourage your children to spend time outdoors. There are many sporting activities they can get involved in. For example, swimming, running, horse riding, etc. These activities are fun as well as providing them with exercise.

  1. Transform Your Backyard

If you work from home, you may not have the option to go out every day. Instead, transform your backyard and make it a fun place to hang out. Install a swing set and slide and other equipment. Trampolines are also fun. Choose items carefully to ensure they are safe for your children. Read online reviews like the Step2 slide review, which provide invaluable information.

  1. Set Up A Campsite In Your Backyard

If you’re not going on vacation this year, you can bring the vacation to you. Set up a campsite in your backyard. Put up tents and sleep outside with the kids. Embrace the whole experience and build a campfire.

Camping in your garden offers the best of both worlds. You have the camping experience of sleeping out of doors and access to a comfortable bathroom.

  1. Get Messy

Many young children like to get messy. They like to have the opportunity to play uninhibited. Set up a messy play area in the backyard. Doing this out of doors makes it much easier to tidy away. Put down paper or ground sheets to protect the ground. Let your children wear their old clothes and get messy. This could involve sand pits, water play, or crafts. Use your imagination and create a play area your kids will love.

  1. Create A Den

Children love dens and forts. Choose a theme and build one in your living room or backyard. It could be as simple as pinning a few old sheets to the washing line. Or you could go to town and put together something a little more elaborate. Make it cozy and have a kids-only rule. No adults allowed unless they are bringing snacks.

  1. Summer Crafting

Spark your kids’ creativity by putting together a craft station. Set aside an area of your home that could be used for arts and crafts. Cover tables with a vinyl tablecloth to protect the surface. Put down sheets and papers over the flooring. Put together some basic craft supplies that your kids can use. Staples include:

  • Acrylic paint
  • Paint brushes and water pots
  • PVA glue
  • Glitter
  • Colored paper
  • Scrapbooks
  • Crayons and gel pens

All of these things can be purchased cheaply. Keep your eye out for other crafty items you can add every so often. And encourage your kids to incorporate their own materials. They can save old newspapers and magazines. Toilet roll inserts and old cartons can also be used in craft projects.

Even with the right materials, it can be difficult to make a start on a craft project. In the early stages have a few projects that your kids can work on. The internet is a rich source of tutorials and projects.

There are lots of ways you can keep the kids entertained this summer. The trick is to prepare for the holidays and have a variety of things they can do. And you don’t even have to leave home to do them.
