Moving to another state is a big deal. Whatever might be taking you there, a new job, moving in with a partner or for the sheer thrill of the adventure, there are a lot of things that you need to consider before making the big move. It isn’t as easy as upping and leaving. This is a decision that will affect your entire life and lifestyle.
Research the area
Don’t walk blindly into a new area without a clue of what it’s going to be like. Research the local area and consider whether you can picture yourself living there happily. If you’re planning on having kids or already have little ones, are there good schools locally? What are the transport links like? Is the neighbourhood considered friendly and safe? Are there all the necessary amenities nearby?
Apply for jobs
If you’re not moving for a job, you’ll want a job secure for when you get to your new home. Check out the local job market and start applying to roles that you think would suit you best. You don’t necessarily have to travel all the way there for an interview. Skype interviews are now common practice.
When you get to your new home, you’re going to have to register with local doctors and dentists. Arrange appointments to do this beforehand. It’s easy to forget to do this once you’re actually there.
Check out your new home
Estate agents can work wonders when it comes to making a home look incredible online. It’s easy to be convinced by their smart descriptions and flattering shots. It’s important to see the house for yourself before committing to living in it. Book a trip to be shown around, even if it’s extremely far from your home. You’ll thank yourself later if it turns out to be less than you imagined. If it’s as perfect as you thought it’d be, then great. You can really look forward to getting through the door.
When you’ve been living in the same space for a while, you’ll accumulate a lot of items that you neither want nor really need. Give your current home a spring clean. Throw out, recycle or donate anything that isn’t necessary. It’ll save space in the lorry and prevent clutter forming in your new home.
Book removal men or women
Booking interstate movers will help you so much when it comes to actually getting your belongings from your old home into the new. They’ll be able to help you lift boxes, organize them into the back of a lorry and drive it all there for you.
Throw a leaving party
You’ll want to say goodbye to your friends and family. They’ll want to give you a good send off too. Why not organise a party with the theme of where you’re moving to? Or perhaps the place you’re moving from? Provide local dishes, play local music and have a great time with your loved ones before you leave.
