Communication Is Key: How To Be More Open With Your Partner

We live in a world where it’s possible to communicate on multiple levels, yet so many of us close up when it comes to our most important and precious relationships. If you’re having difficulty communicating with your partner, you’ve come to the right place. Here are some helpful hints to help you be more open.

Getting things off your chest

Have you got thoughts whizzing around your head or is something troubling you? If you’ve got anxiety about a certain issue or you’ve got negative thoughts bubbling away, it’s always best to get things off your chest. Even if you don’t feel ready to talk to your partner, it’s cathartic to express yourself and share what you’re feeling. Talk to a friend in confidence or see a therapist. Once you’ve ranted and raved or you’ve had a good cry, your mind should feel clearer, and you can prepare yourself to chat to your partner about what had been troubling you. If you bottle things up, you may find that you explode at a later date, and it’s much more difficult to control your emotions this way.

Being honest

They say that honesty is the best policy, and in the vast majority of cases, this is true when it comes to relationships. If you’re not happy, be honest with your partner, and tell them that you want to make changes or even that you want to go your separate ways if you’re sure that this is the path you want to take. There’s no point in lying to yourself or your other half. If there are things that aren’t quite right, being honest about it will help you move forward, whether you want to try and find a solution or you think it’s best to split. If you can’t communicate in a constructive manner, and you both get angry or upset, consider options like mediation services available at the law office of Van T. Doan. Mediation enables both parties to get their point across in a neutral setting, and it can be beneficial if you’re having problems resolving issues between you when emotions are running high, and feelings are very raw. It can be very difficult to be honest if you’re worried about the reaction you might get or you don’t want to hurt somebody you love, but it’s the right thing to do.

Learning not to be a closed book

Are you one of those people who is incredibly hard to read? Do you rarely give anything away? If so, it can be very easy for those around you to get mixed signals or to misunderstand you when you do try and communicate. If you naturally shy away from openness, it can be difficult to change the way you approach life, but try and take baby steps. If you find it hard to open up, talk to the people you feel most comfortable with first. Do you confide in a therapist or do you offload all your worries onto that one friend who knows you better than anyone? Once you feel more confident, you can bring this into your relationship.
