Does Your Career Inspire Your Kids?

Our children are probably our biggest asset in life. It doesn’t matter whether you own your own home or car, children are the living legacy that you leave behind on earth. It’s because of this that it’s so important that we inspire, engage and motivate our children to be the best that they can be. The first place your children look for inspiration? You. They look to you to teach them right from wrong, how to be kind, manners and morals. It makes sense that your children would also look to you when it comes to deciding what to do for their career. After all, following in the footsteps of a successful parent gives them something to aim for.

We unconsciously shape the career choices of our children, simply by living our own careers around them. Those who spend their lives watching a parent save lives as a doctor, or assist in that as a nurse will likely want to learn how to be in medicine themselves. They will want to visit agencies in their research and learn about 360 Healthcare Staffing, so that they can give themselves the chance for an educated decision. If you don’t want your child to follow in your career footsteps, it’s important to help them to understand that they don’t HAVE to do what you do, simply because you do it. Helping them to learn that they have their own strengths that they can play to is part and parcel of being a parent.

However, take some pride and happiness if you do inspire your children with your career choices. The fact your children respect what you do and want to be the same as you is a huge achievement for a parent. The knowledge that you can impart wisdom and make your child feel like they have someone to emulate and idolise is wonderful! Imagine going through life, feeling like you are struggling in your role and in your job, feeling exhausted every hour of the day and still managing to inspire those you forgot were even watching you in the first place. That sheer happiness you can feel is something you should be proud of as a parent.

Cultivating curiosity and helping to nurture the passions your children feel is part of the job, but it’s also going to help shape them in the career that they do decide to go down, whether they follow you or not. Being an inspiration can feel like a big deal – and it is a big deal – but instead of feeling pressured you should take the chance to advise and help where you can. Guide your children to the right paths, the same path you once took to get to where you are. Make them feel like they can achieve whatever it is that they wish to achieve and give them to tools to make their career dreams happen. You can feel safe and secure in the knowledge that if you achieve nothing else, you’ve been a motivation and a hero to your child. And sometimes, that’s all you need.
