The Bronx is rising and we are seeing more small businesses. While I like major food chains like Cheesecake Factory, Hard Rock Cafe, BBQ’s, and Olive Garden, there is something unique about restaurants that are run with an entrepreneurial spirit. You find these unique restaurants like Harlem Shake, Red Rooster in Harlem and you have Sweet Chicks in Brooklyn but what about the Bronx? Bronx is the birthplace of Hip-Hop what do they have to offer?
Harlem, Brooklyn, Manhattan have restaurants owned by entrepreneurs that add a personal touch that big food chains don’t have.
I recently got the chance to stop at a new hotspot called Empanology. The name alone makes you curious. With a bit of Puerto Rican island feel mixed with modern contemporary gives you the villages vibes with brick walls.
I grew up around Puerto Ricans all my life playing on the block, learning spanish eating Arroz con pollo and I loved empanadas.
What makes Empanology unique:
They have a truck stand on the inside.
The decor is great with a contemporary vide with brick walls
Great outside venue including string lights and board games outside
Variety of empanadas like Red Velvet and Vegan options
They had celebrities like Mos Def come by and they have hosted a series of other summer events. We are waiting for Jenny from the block to come through (hint, hint)
This is a great spot for couples, family gatherings and just hanging out with your friends.
About the owner
Jason Alicea developed his passion for food at an early age. Jason’s early exposure to food’s ability to bring people together. Their goal is to make empanadas a household name replacing Taco Tuesday in your family’s weekly line up.

It wasn’t until my hair became unhealthy is when I understood the importance of natural ingredients in your hair. I am a 4c natural and for years I used a chemical relaxer in my hair making it weak and brittle. Once I stopped putting chemicals in my hair I noticed length, strength, shine and health. When I chose hair products I make sure they contain natural ingredients which is why I was happy when chosen to review the Desert Essence haircare products.
Desert Essence Anti-Breakage Shampoo and Conditioner
Founded in 1978, Desert Essence is a leader in natural personal care. Their inspiration and ingredients draw from the desert, as it is “a model of pristine balance and sustainability, where limited resources, if used responsibly, offer the body and spirit untold benefits.” Using nutrient-rich botanicals revered in native cultures for their healing properties, Desert Essence’s body, skin, and hair care products work in harmony with the body to soothe, nurture, and restore. “Thanks for Mazda I was provided the new 2018 Mazda CX-9 to test drive for a week. All opinions expressed here are my own”
Recently, we took a trip on a well needed vacation to Hershey, Pennsylvania. We wanted to go somewhere that was just a drive away so we decided to go to Hershey Park. We got the opportunity to ride in style with the 2018 CX-9 Mazda Touring.
Why Mazda CX-9 Is The Perfect Family Car
The first thing you notice about the car is the color (the soul red crystal is the best). We got complimented on this car everywhere we went.
The interior will appeal to your senses the model we had the seats were beige (sand)and the trim was black it was just the right touch of elegance. The interior is also unique in that the rotary center console is high (feels different at first) but you come to appreciate its uniqueness. The navigation was at the top of the dashboard my husband says its easier to stay focused on the road.
We took full advantage of the BOSE speakers listening to our favorite tunes. Immediately, my 7 and 5 year old loved the built in charger port is the middle console. While we didn’t use the third row it was great to have and you wouldn’t believe how comfortable they are (yes soft) and you don’t feel cramped.
Space & Storage
This model is a 7 passenger which is great for a large family. With two carseats in the second row I was there was still space for a person to sit in the middle of them. The truck space is very spacious being able to hold all of our luggage.
When you have a family you want to ensure your child’s safety. Mazda does a great job of ensuring safety on the road. They have 24 hour roadside assistance, Latch child safety seat anchors, dynamic stability control, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, rear parking sensors just to name a few.
The Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring has an average 23 mpg. The annual fuel cost is estimated at 1,550 and the city average is 20 with 26 mpg being the average for a highway. We drove from New York to Hershey Pennsylvania and didn’t need to fuel up until the next day in the afternoon.
If you are looking for a car that will make the entire family happy look no further than the Mazda CX-9. My brother-n-law loved the car so much that he brought it the following week. I don’t drive but I do believe my first car will be a Mazda.

5 Reasons Why You Should Take Your Kids To Cooking Class
I think a lot of little girls start to learn how to cook by making their first pancake with mom in the kitchen you are standing on a stool and when the pancakes are ready she helps you flip it over. My first cooking experience was with my grandmother as I helped her mix the ingredients together to bake a cake. I have two kids and I haven’t quite given them the cooking with mom experience for I am a little afraid of the knives and fire from the stove also as I cook in a rush its not something I take my time to do.
I remember being in the kitchen and my son saying mom I want to be a chef. I’m saying to myself how can I get him to start cooking? I searched online for cooking classes and came across Cooking With Kids NY. I had the pleasure of going to the Cooking With Kids NY at the Diamond Cut Fitness Gym in the Bronx.
About Cooking For Kids NY
The founder Sharon loves to introduce new foods to children. Cooking With Kids was created from a love of cooking, a love of teaching children and a love of expanding the minds and palates of others!
I figured taking my son and daughter to a cooking class they would be able to experience what its like to cook their own dish.
Here are my 5 reasons to take your child to a cooking class:
1.) Try New Things: I am all about experiencing new things with your kids the Founder Sharon uses exotic dishes the one they was Thai.
2.) Learn From Their Peers: What I absolutely love is that she let the older kids help the younger kids and Tovelle even made friends when it was over.
3.) Try What You Cook: My daughter doesn’t drink milk but once she saw everyone making chai tea she tried and liked it.
4.) Independence: As I said earlier its hard to cook with your kids because you are focusing on their safety but all knives were made for children even the onion chopper was a cute roller and my son was able to roll the skin off of the garlic.
5.) Boosts self-esteem: Knowing that they have accomplished something on their own makes them take pride in themselves my son ate his own food saying “I made this”.

Growing up my grandmother used canola oil for frying, sautéing and all of our baking needs. She used canola oil for everything that required an oil but I have learned that those oils are toxic and I am going to explain just why palm oil is beneficial to your health.
They say if you know better than you do better I met my husband and he was more health conscious than I was and he taught me how to take better care of myself. I started being more health conscious and started using oils like coconut and olive oil but just when you think you have a great oil you realize there are so many different factors to look for. You have to make sure the oils are organic, non-gmo and heat tolerant.
At last I found an oil that is everything wrapped into one and its palm oil. Palm oil is organic, non-gmo and has a smoke point of 450 degrees.
After doing some research I found that Malaysian Palm oil
Palm Oil is nutrient dense. It’s a rich source of carotenoids pro-Vitamin A, it has a balanced fatty acid composition and high content of Vitamin E tocopherols
Free of Trans fat. Palm fat is free of trans fatty acids
Withstand high temperature. If you love to fry then this is the best oil to use.
Great for cosmetic use.I make my own Shea Butter mix and now I will use Palm Oil which makes your skin soft and supple.
Malaysia is a responsible palm oil producer.Malaysia was the first country to produce sustainable oil.
Where does Palm Oil come from?
In tropical climates, a special species of palm tree produces bunches of oil-rich fruit. Plantation workers hand pick massive fruit bunches which are then squeezed to release the palm oil.
For my popcorn lovers I have a great recipe for you
Put two tablespoons of palm oil in a pot. Turn burner up to medium high heat
Add three kernels of popcorn to the pot. Wait for them to pop
Remove the three popped kernels all 1/4 cup of popcorn. Cover the pan, give it a shake and let it sit for 30 seconds to 3 minutes. This will enable the kernels to pop faster in crispier and more evenly cooked popcorn
Put the pot back on the stove over medium high heat with the lid slightly open so the steam can escape. When the popcorn starts to pop shake the pot around a bit. As soon as the popping tapers off, even slightly take the pot off of the burner.
Place popped popcorn in a bowl
Add 4 tablespoons of butter to the pot and let it melt. Stir in the chopped herbs to infuse, then add the popcorn and salt.
