What is a Conex Container?

To answer this question, we will need to take a little trip down memory lane. During the Second World War that lasted between 1939 and 1945, the U.S army had issues with moving supplies from the U.S to the frontlines. It tried to come up with storage units that could be used to ship these supplies. A lot of the supplies were being stolen en route and this was in addition to the delays that were experienced as a result of the time it took to load and unload the supplies from the ship because the supplies had to be loaded and unloaded in bits.

By 1948, the U.S army succeeded in creating a storage and shipping unit that was solid enough to withstand the demands of the shipping process. This unit was called the Transporter and could carry up to 9000 pounds.

The Transporter proved to be a huge success so the army improved on it by making it modular. This happened in 1952. Now, this improved version of the Transporter was called the Container Express of Conex for short. You can read this interesting history here. The largest of these containers measured 8 ft. 6 inches in length, 6 ft. 3 inches in width and 6 ft. 10 inches in height. Despite the fact that the ISO-standard containers we have today are much larger than this, the military still refers to them as Conex containers. So what we are basically saying is that anytime you hear the term “Conex container”, we are just talking about the same ISO-standard containers you know and see every day. Sorry if you were expecting a
more dramatic explanation.
