Sunshine and warm weather tends to bring out the best in us, often motivating us to improve our fitness and ramp up our self-care routines. And with summer around the corner, now is the perfect time to start thinking about our health with these 4 simple and easy ways to take better care of ourselves for a fit and happy summer season!
Protect your skin
Wearing sunscreen should be a crucial part of your everyday skincare routine, whether it’s summer or not and should be a part of everyone’s morning skincare routine. Even if you don’t have a skincare routine, you shouldn’t step out of the house without applying your SPF if you want to maintain healthy and youthful-looking skin. Make sure to choose the best SPF for your skin type – with sunscreens catered towards both dry and oily skin there are so many available on the market these days that you can’t go wrong! Choose a mineral sunscreen that is environmentally and coral-reef friendly and apply your SPF in thick layers, regularly, making sure to re-apply every 2 hours.
Eat fresh food
Summer is a great time when it comes to fresh food, as lots of fruits such as strawberries and raspberries are in season. Take advantage and make some delicious smoothies to get your daily fruit and vegetable intake in one quick, easy and delicious serving. This time of year makes eating healthy, wholesome foods so much easier due to all the fresh produce available at the local grocery store, so experiment in the kitchen with new recipes that your body will benefit from. Typical produce that you will find in summer includes watermelon, green beans, berries, peaches, grapes, corn and tomatoes. Add a fruit and veg shop into your weekly routine and don’t be afraid to pick up and try something different to add a little variety into your diet.
Stay hydrated
An obvious summer health tip? Maybe. But one that is too often overlooked. Most of us struggle to drink enough water and stay hydrated throughout the year with the standard recommendation being around 2 litres per day. With the temperatures rising, heat and sweat can quickly leave us even more dehydrated. Look after your body and make sure to drink enough by carrying around a big water bottle to remind yourself to drink and stay on track. Not a massive fan of water? Spruce it up by adding some fruit or chilled infused teas to keep your water intake up and treat yourself to a thermal spray to keep your skin hydrated on the outside as well.
Reassess your overall health
You don’t want to have any health worries niggling away at you at the back of your mind, causing unnecessary stress and anxiety during the summer months when you simply want to enjoy yourself. Just as a car has a regular MOT health check, having regular GP check-ups and assessing your health is the most effective way to prevent minor health issues from turning into a more significant health problem later down the line. Make sure to reassess your overall health needs as well by ensuring that your glasses have the right prescription, that you have appropriate sun protection, or that your hearing aid is on the correct setting and fitted correctly.
