Headaches are incredibly irritating, and sometimes they can even become debilitating. From sharp flashes to slow, dull throbs, often they just make you want to lie down in a dark room and wait for it to pass. While over-the-counter pain relief can help you carry on with your day, if you’re experiencing headaches, it’s often time to identify what’s causing them and get to the root of the problem. While headaches can be a symptom of a serious health issue, more often than not, they’re signs of something less sinister. Below are a few common causes of headaches that might help you get to the bottom of your issue.
Stress can have many effects on your body, and you must do what you can to reduce this for the sake of your physical health as well as your mental well-being. Often people feel the tension in their shoulders or tightness in their chest as a result of stress, but it can manifest in muscular pain all over your body. It can lead to upset stomachs, hair loss, and commonly it can result in headaches. If you have had things going on in your life recently that have been making you feel overwhelmed and tense, try to practice some mindfulness techniques to help calm you down, or work out your frustrations with some exercise.
- Poor Eyesight
Another common cause of headaches is poor eyesight, and if you’re noticing, your headaches appear to be concentrated around or behind your eyes; this is probably the issue. Book in for an eye-test, especially if you’ve noticed that your vision is blurry or your eyes are becoming increasingly tired. Another way your eyes might be strained is if you work with computers frequently, as the light from the screens can cause this. Purchase some computer glasses designed to filter the blue light from the screen and see if that makes a difference. If not, you might need to have an eye test to rule out needing prescription lenses.
It’s easy to get pre-occupied with work or other tasks during the day and hours pass before you have a drink. Your health needs to stay hydrated, so if you’re getting headaches more regularly, try to increase your water intake. If you drink a lot of caffeinated drinks, this could also be having an effect, so try to reduce the number of coffees, teas, or energy drinks you consume each day, or switch to decaf.

If you’re skipping meals or eating a lot of food that has a lot of added nitrates, this could be a cause of your headaches. A healthy, balanced diet helps to keep your whole body functioning properly, so if you’re not giving it the things it needs, you’ll start to notice a range of physical reactions to a poor diet, including headaches.
- Lack of Sleep
Finally, if you’re not sleeping well, the exhaustion will result in frequent headaches. You might not be sleeping due to stress or anxiety, in which case you should try to find ways to cope and calm your mind, particularly before you go to bed.
