Unfortunately in life, sometimes you will need to have surgery. There are many reasons that you might need it, from a routine operation to getting rid of a tumour or operating on a bone that you might have injured such as in sports. When you have surgery you are likely going to have an amount of downtime where you won’t be able to work and will need to rest up. If you are someone with an active lifestyle this can be difficult, but it’s also important that you listen to your doctor’s advice in order to have the speediest and best recovery. Here we have put together some top tips for after having surgery to make it that little bit easier.

Take it easy

Even if you feel well in yourself, it is important to take it easy and not push yourself. While you might think you can walk that extra bit of distance, push yourself up or lift up your child, it could actually end up hindering your progress rather than speeding up your healing. If your doctor or healthcare provider has told you to take it easy, make sure you do so.

Follow all of the instructions set by your healthcare provider

Your healthcare provider would have given you a set of instructions when you were discharged from the hospital so be sure to follow these. For example, you might have been told to wear some compression socks, so be sure to get the facts and wear these as instructed. You will also have follow up appointments made so they can check your progress – make sure you attend these.

Ensure you drink and eat correctly

When you are feeling run down or ill, it can be tempting to indulge in your favourite junk food and sweet snacks. While this is fine in moderation, in order for your body to heal properly and quickly, you need to be eating and drinking the right things. This includes plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and drinking enough water to keep hydrated.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help

If you find that things are getting a bit tough on your own, don’t be afraid to ask for help. This could be with things such as tidying up your house or picking your kids up from school. There will always be family or friends that can help you or if not, you can always hire a carer or speak to your healthcare provider to see if you can get some help in. Make sure you don’t struggle on your own.

These are just a few top tips for after having surgery that can help you with the best possible recovery. Remember that your body has been through an ordeal so you need to treat it carefully. Listen to what your body is trying to tell you and when you need to rest, do so. Have you had surgery? What are some top tips that you find helpful? Let us know in the comments below.
